GL Wand Users Share Tips on Streamlined Financial Reporting from SAP during SAPPHIRE Event

In interactive panel discussions, customers of Excel4apps highlighted how GL Wand enables real-time SAP financial reporting with easy drill down and reporting from an Excel-based interface

Raleigh,  NC – May 22, 2013 – SAP users learned how Excel4apps  expedites financial reporting from SAP with its flagship GL Wand solution at SAPPHIRE NOW, Americas’ SAP Users’ Group (ASUG) Annual Conference, held May 14-16 in Orlando. In an interactive customer panel, Kevin Lybbert, senior cost/SAP analyst for Purcell Systems, and Anton Farenyk, SAP FI analyst for EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc., shared perspectives on how their companies are improving and streamlining SAP financial reporting with GL Wand.

Specifically, Lybbert and Farenyk discussed the challenges Purcell and EXFO were experiencing prior to implementing GL Wand. Panel attendees learned how the companies now extract live data from their SAP systems using GL Wand’s Microsoft Excel interface for fast, flexible ad-hoc reporting and analysis. They also heard how to report balances from the new SAP general ledger (GL) and the classic GL, as well as how to execute cost center accounting, profit center accounting, orders, activity types, and statistical key figures (SKF), all within the ease of Excel.

“We were delighted to have two of our valued customers speak about the difference GL Wand has made in financial reporting processes, allowing them to make the most of their SAP investment,” said Chris Meyer, President, Americas for Excel4apps. “It is our mission to take away the frustration and pain points with financial reporting tasks as we’ve done for Purcell Systems and EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering.”

According to Lybbert, Purcell Systems has significantly expedited monthly closes by creating financial reports in GL Wand. “We’ve reduced our month end from four days to one with GL Wand and we can now trust the data,” he said, referring to GL Wand’s access to real-time SAP information.

Farenyk of EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering reflected on GL Wand’s ease of use during the panel discussion. “GL Wand is such an incredibly intuitive tool.  We’ve barely needed any training from Excel4apps,” he noted.

GL Wand is an SAP Certified Integration solution and an award-winning, Excel-based financial reporting tool for finance professionals using SAP Financials for SAP 4.7, ERP 2004/ECC 5.0, or ERP 2005/ECC 6.0. It enables highly efficient and secure financial reporting, shorter month ends, and faster refreshes with ad-hoc inquiry and drill downs.

  • Integrate Microsoft Excel Within Your SAP Environment for Seamless, Real-Time Reporting & Analysis

Featured in SAPinsider - Apr 2013 - Integrate Microsoft Excel Within Your SAP Environment for Seamless, Real-Time Reporting & Analysis

    11 April 2013

To make it easier to format and slice and dice data, many financial users manually cut and paste information from a data warehouse into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Excel is often more intuitive for them than other reporting tools, and its familiar formatting capabilities and robust functionality support effective communication and easy calculations and modeling of financial data.

Even after an ERP implementation and the introduction of new reporting tools and capabilities, many financial users still prefer to use Excel as a front-end interface for structuring reports and manipulating data into a useful format. However, getting the necessary data from SAP systems into Excel can be a timeconsuming, multi-step process that requires help from the IT department, which must program queries for extracting the data and putting it in a data warehouse. Afterward, users must push the data a step further from the warehouse into Excel. Ad hoc report requests like these can become particularly demanding and time consuming for both the finance users and IT, and the more IT falls behind, the longer it takes for the finance department to receive the reports they need.

  • Excel4apps at Collaborate 13

Excel4apps to Host Educational, Social Events at Collaborate 13 Oracle Applications User Forum

    8 April 2013

In sessions and at Booth #1217, Excel4apps shows how GL Wand mitigates loss of Client ADI via live link to Oracle financial data, with easy drill down and reporting from an Excel-based interface

COLLABORATE 13, Denver – April 8, 2013 – Oracle users will have several opportunities to learn about Excel4apps financial reporting solutions at the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) Collaborate 13 forum, held April 7-11 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. A key focus will be on how organizations upgrading to Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 or upgrading from MS Excel 2003 can use GL Wand from Excel4apps to solve the challenges in reporting from Oracle’s General Ledger (GL) because Oracle’s Client Application Desktop Integrator (ADI) is no longer available.

Excel4apps will hold two education sessions during Collaborate, an annual event attended by 5,000 Oracle users:

    - “Deeper Dive into GL Wand 5: The Latest Excel-Based Reporting Solution for Oracle 11i/R12 from Excel4apps” is scheduled for 2:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, April 8. Alex Chard, product developer with Excel4apps, will demonstrate new features in GL Wand 5, the latest pre-release of the GL Wand financial reporting software.
    - “How Glatfelter Insurance Group Is Streamlining Oracle R12 Reporting Using Excel-Based Solutions” is scheduled for 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 10. Jennifer Raffensberger, Corporate Controller for Glatfelter, one of the largest privately owned insurance brokers in the U.S., will discuss how GL Wand is filling the gaps left with the loss of Client ADI in the R12 environment.

“We look forward to sharing our experience with GL Wand during Collaborate,” said Raffensberger. “The product has saved us countless hours and freed us up to focus more on data analysis. The more we use GL Wand, the more applications we find for it.”

Used for years to produce FSG (Financial Statement Generator) reports, Oracle’s Client ADI was replaced in R12 by browser-based applications that leave gaps with the familiar Client ADI functionality. Many organizations upgrading to R12 or upgrading to Excel 2007 or 2010 have turned to GL Wand from Excel4apps because it delivers real-time GL data via a direct link between Oracle and Excel, dramatically cutting steps from the report creation process – even beyond Client ADI.

Prior to the official opening of Collaborate 13, Excel4apps will host its first user group workshop, an interactive session in which Oracle E-Business Suite 11i/R12 users will hear from experts on how to maximize GL Wand and Reports Wand from Excel4apps. The workshop is scheduled for 1-4:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 7. Other Excel4apps events at Collaborate 13 include:

    - RadiOAUG interview with Scott Engel of Enphase Energy
    , a current Excel4apps customer using GL Wand with R12 reporting, at 7:45 p.m., Monday, April 8.
    - “Grab and Go” event, Monday, April 8. Those entering the exhibit hall at its 6 p.m. opening receive an Excel4apps Collaborate T-shirt along with a key that might open the Excel4apps treasure chest at the company’s Booth #1217.
    - Cocktail reception from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, for customer and prospects. Hosted by Excel4apps and two of its business partners, More4apps and Infosemantics, the reception will be held at Tag Restaurant near the Colorado Convention Center.

“We are delighted to have such a high profile at Collaborate 13,” said Chris Meyer, President, Americas for Excel4apps. “And we look forward to sharing our expertise on how GL Wand helps Oracle users sidestep issues with the loss of Client ADI in the R12 environment. We also will be showcasing the exciting new features in GL Wand 5, which further empowers financial users with faster refreshes and drill downs to Oracle General Ledger data.”

According to Meyer, GL Wand users have noted that submitting ad-hoc reports that once took 15 minutes with Client ADI and 45 minutes with R12 reporting tools take less than five minutes in GL Wand, leaving more time for valuable analysis and less time with frustrating, multi-step processes.

GL Wand is an Oracle Validated Integration solution, and Excel4apps is a Gold-level member in Oracle PartnerNetwork and a 5-Star OAUG partner. For more information on GL Wand Pre-Release 5 and to access a free trial, visit www.excel4apps.com/glwand5.

  • Loss of Client ADI - Oracle R12

Frustrated by Reporting after Oracle R12 or Excel 2007 Migration? GL Wand Sidesteps Struggles from Loss of Client ADI

    19 July 2012

GL Wand mitigates the loss of Client ADI with R12 or Excel 2007 migrations via direct link to Oracle financial data, with easy drill down and intuitive report creation from an Excel-based interface

    Raleigh, NC – July 19, 2012
    – As organizations upgrade to Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Release 12 or MS Excel 2007, they encounter challenges in reporting from the General Ledger (GL) because Oracle’s Client Application Desktop Integrator (ADI) is no longer available. Used for years to produce FSG (Financial Statement Generator) reports, Client ADI was replaced in R12 by browser-based applications that leave gaps with the familiar Client ADI functionality. Many organizations upgrading to R12 or Excel 2007 have turned to GL Wand from Excel4apps because it delivers real-time GL data via a direct link between Oracle and Excel, dramatically cutting steps from the report creation process – even beyond Client ADI.

“Using their Excel skills, financial users easily create and modify standard and ad-hoc reports with GL Wand’s friendly Excel interface and drill down to sub-ledger details with a simple mouse click – all without requiring IT support,” said Chris Meyer, Managing Director Americas for Excel4apps. “GL Wand reports are similar to those from Oracle methods, yet the process is faster and more intuitive. GL Wand users have noted that submitting ad-hoc reports that once took 15 minutes with Client ADI and 45 minutes with R12 reporting tools take less than five minutes in GL Wand, leaving more time for valuable analysis and less time with frustrating, multi-step processes.”

Now available, the latest version of GL Wand – GL Wand Pre-Release 5 – further empowers financial users with faster refreshes and drill downs to Oracle GL data. The Java-based software installs easily for IT departments and launches directly from Oracle, creating even less steps in the reporting process for users. Intuitive toolbars and enhanced functionality help financial users build richer reports in less time.

GL Wand is an Oracle Validated Integration solution, and Excel4apps is a Gold-level member in Oracle PartnerNetwork. For more information on GL Wand Pre-Release 5 and to access a free trial, visit www.excel4apps.com/glwand5.

  • Nucleus Research Finds GL Wand Fills Reporting Gaps Left by Enterprise Systems and Traditional BI Software

    22 July 2011

RALEIGH, NC (July 21, 2011) – In order to provide value, financial data from enterprise systems like SAP and Oracle must be in the right hands at the right time, yet reporting information from these applications remains a challenge for many organizations in terms of time and resources. Even business intelligence (BI) tools fall short for companies that need to avoid the initial and ongoing costs of such applications.

In a recently published, independent research note, Nucleus Research found that gaps in reporting left by enterprise and BI systems can be filled by non-traditional BI tools like GL Wand from Excel4apps, a provider of best-in-class Excel-based financial reporting software for use with SAP and Oracle. GL Wand pulls general ledger data directly into an easy-to-manipulate Excel ® spreadsheet, without the need for a data warehouse or information technology (IT) programming support. • Excel4apps and Z Option Announce Partnership to Offer Business Users Full Circle Access to SAP Financials

    23 March 2011

Business users gain direct links to SAP through familiar Excel interfaces for uploading and downloading data without programming help

RALEIGH, NC (March 23, 2011) – Excel4apps, a provider of best-in-class Excel based reporting software for use with SAP and Oracle, has today announced its partnership with Z Option, a leading developer of complementary software solutions for SAP. With easy spreadsheet uploads from Z Option’s GLSU product and direct downloads of live SAP data for financial reports using GL Wand from Excel4apps, business users never leave the comfort of Excel to complete critical tasks.

“We are pleased to join forces with Z Option to provide business users real-time, full circle access to SAP, without lengthy waits for programming support that cut into valuable time needed for financial analysis,” said Chris Meyer, Director Americas for Excel4apps. “GLSU’s ability to quickly upload general ledger entries is a natural complement to GL Wand’s fast downloads of SAP data for ad hoc and standard reports. Because users directly interface with SAP via Excel, productivity, as well as accuracy, is maximized with these products.”

Both GL Wand and GLSU are easy to install and require no additional hardware. Likewise, the two products require little training, as most financial users and accountants have already mastered Excel. In addition to holding SAP Partner status, Excel4apps and Z Option share a similar corporate background, as well as a culture grounded in customer support.

“Excel4apps holds our own philosophy for establishing long-term relationships with customers, as well as our core belief in developing real solutions for real-world business challenges,” said Jim Halepaska, Co-Founder of Z Option. “Like us, Excel4apps was founded by accounting and finance experts, so our common mission is to support these types of users by sharing our skills and providing flexible software that improves productivity in working with SAP.”

For customers like iNova Pharmaceuticals, a provider of over-the-counter and prescription medicines to international markets, the combined power of GL Wand and GLSU results in an automated monthly accounting cycle. The company’s finance group easily capitalizes on the familiar Excel access each tool provides to SAP.

“As an accountant, I simply calculate an adjusting journal based on actual values with GL Wand, then upload the adjustment amounts as journals using GLSU – without rekeying values or performing other error-prone and inefficient activities,” said Peter Tysoe, Group Finance Manager for iNova Pharmaceuticals. “To complete the process, I simply click the refresh button to see the latest updated actuals. Any templates I may create can easily be used next month, or adapted for other areas to further speed up month-end cycles.”

  • Excel4apps Streamlines Reports from SAP Financials with New Version of Established GL Wand Reporting Tool

    2 December 2009

An SAP PartnerEdge Program member, Excel4apps extends accuracy and productivity benefits of flagship GL Wand product to new user base.

Sydney, Australia (December 2, 2009) – Excel4apps, a provider of best-in-class Excel based reporting and budget loading software for Oracle and SAP, today announced the release of GL Wand 1.10 for SAP. GL Wand for SAP is an innovative Excel based tool that streamlines reporting for finance departments that run SAP Financials. As part of the SAP PartnerEdge Program, Excel4apps works closely with SAP to develop and certify the technical integration of GL Wand with SAP software. GL Wand augments SAP by helping users access and analyze live financial information more productively through a familiar Excel front end.

“GL Wand for SAP extends the same benefits to SAP users that customers of GL Wand for Oracle have appreciated for years, including more efficient finance reporting, shorter monthly closes and fasters refreshes directly from ERP system data,” said Michele Buson, Director and Co-Founder of Excel4apps. “Our development team of chartered accountants and experienced SAP users has created an entirely new code base for this version of GL Wand that is tailored exclusively for SAP, and initial SAP users cite the product as indispensable for expedited analysis and ad hoc reporting.”

GL Wand links directly with SAP, without the need for a data warehouse or additional hardware, as with other reporting tools. Installed within minutes and easy to use, it requires little support from information technology staff for support and programming. Report creation is easily accomplished by accountants and other financial users with minimal training, and reports can drill down into line items and individual cells within SAP data.

"Our very first month-end on SAP was only made possible by migrating the trial version of GL Wand into production,” said Simon Taylor, Finance Manager for Sphere Healthcare, a large-scale pharmaceutical contract manufacturer based in Australia. “We recognized the instant value of GL Wand and immediately issued a purchase order for the software to IQX, our reseller.”

GL Wand also enforces SAP authorizations, as opposed to those of a separate data warehouse, for unparalleled data security. “GL Wand’s integration architecture is based on SAP’s connector for Microsoft .NET v2.01, which allows users to log onto SAP via GL Wand and read requested financial data as SAP authorizations allow,” said Grant Peterson, Product Manager, GL Wand for SAP. “The architecture protects data from unauthorized access while producing highly auditable reports.”

As a participant in the SAP PartnerEdge program, Excel4apps develops integrated applications that extend, complement and add value to SAP solutions, thereby helping mutual customers more successfully meet business needs and drive strong results. GL Wand 1.10 for SAP is available for free trial and down load at http://www.excel4apps.com/sap.

  • Excel4apps Accelerates FSG Report Conversion for Oracle Users with Latest GL Wand Release

    7 October 2009

GL Wand’s new FSG Converter helps organizations quickly transform Oracle reports into an easy-to-use Excel format

ORACLE OpenWorld, San Francisco, CA, October 12, 2009 – Excel4apps, a provider of best-in-class Excel based reporting and budgeting software for Oracle users, today announced the release of GL Wand 3.90. The upgrade includes a feature for fast conversion of reports from Oracle’s Financial Statement Generator (FSG) into a familiar Excel format. Within minutes, GL Wand’s FSG Converter transforms Oracle FSG reports into a formatted, refreshable and drillable Excel based report that accesses live financial data through GL Wand’s tight integration with Oracle.

“The FSG Converter allows companies that have invested in customized FSG reports to convert them to Excel with minimal effort for future manipulation in GL Wand,” said Chris Meyer, Director Americas for Excel4apps. “Because accountants and financial analysts are working with GL Wand’s Excel front end, they can then easily refresh and edit the former FSG reports without the need for SQL coding and other information technology (IT) support, enabling a more productive organization.”

The FSG Converter feature quickly extracts and transfers Oracle FSG row and column set definitions into an Excel spreadsheet. Sophisticated drill-down capabilities within GL Wand allow users to view live Oracle data at the journal and sub-ledger levels, as well as see multiple transactions at once. This flexibility has improved productivity for GL Wand users, such as Alliance Coal.

“GL Wand’s FSG layout of the Excel file is easy to work with and provides a great guideline for converting FSG reports, which now takes us hours instead of days,” said Steve Coop, Corporate Finance and Planning Manager for Alliance Coal. “For reporting and account reconciliations, GL Wand is a must have tool.”

Coop also commented on GL Wand’s ability to convert the most complex of reports, such as Alliance Coals’ cash flow statement, which includes multiple budget-to actual comparisons.

“With the FSG Converter, we quickly converted the cash flow statement and released the report in just over one day,” described Steve Coop. “Previously, we had to create complex SQL code to download the row and column set information and merge multiple cells using complex Excel formulas --- a very time consuming process. We appreciate how Excel4apps is continually adding new functionality like the FSG Converter to GL Wand so we spend time analyzing data rather than formatting it.”

  • Excel4apps Teams with Mexico City’s Quadrantix to Serve Spanish Speaking Markets

    4 August 2009

Raleigh, NC -- Fast growing software developer Excel4apps, which creates time-saving software that allows Oracle users to interface seamlessly with Excel for report generation and distribution, has entered into a reseller agreement with Mexico City-based Quadrantix for GL Wand in Mexico, South America and other Spanish-speaking markets. According to Chris Meyer, Managing Director for the Americas, Excel4apps continues to grow rapidly and finding a partner to help respond to inquiries from Spanish speaking customers has proven important as Oracle users in Mexico and South America find Excel4apps’ software both well priced and appropriate to their needs.

“Quadrantix has an established track record working with companies that use Oracle Financials, and we have been mutually on each other’s radar for a while. Quadrantix has existing customers who want the reporting capabilities of GL Wand and we have prospects that Quandrantix can serve because of their Spanish language expertise,” Meyer says. Jose Flores, lead partner for Quadrantix, says his firm sees GL Wand as a great product for their current customer base, and they are excited to respond to the inquiries and leads that Excel4apps provides from Spanish-speaking entities.

“We see a very large market for GL Wand, both within our key Mexico City area, as well as in industrialized parts of Mexico, such as Monterrey, where most businesses rely on Oracle. Businesses in Brazil, Peru and South American markets are also emerging as strongly loyal Oracle users who want to reduce costs and improve efficiencies in reporting,” Flores says.

The price point for GL Wand is one of its strongest sales points. Not only is it inexpensive to license and easy to install, but training takes as little as two hours. Quadrantix has already created Spanish language webinar materials and will manage customer demos and product evaluations with Spanish speaking customers. Quadrantix has always focused on serving a customer base of Oracle users. Starting with database module support, the company moved in to both development and more broad-based support for end users. The company’s main office is in Mexico City. They also have an office in Monterrey, Mexico, as well as in San Jose, California.

“We understand the challenges our customers are facing, and we also understand the value GL Wand brings to their processes,” Flores says.

  • Excel4apps Inks Deal with HBO®

    28 September 2008

Cable Programming Giant Becomes 100th GL Wand Customer

Raleigh, NC – September 21, 2008 -- Excel4apps, an independent software developer focused on creating applications that work with Oracle® financial reporting systems, has reached an important milestone in the adoption of its GL Wand product with Home Box Office, Inc. (HBO) as its 100th customer. This brings the number of licensed users of the product to more than 2000 worldwide. HBO, America’s most popular pay television service, adopted the GL Wand package to allow their Finance department to run their Oracle reports directly in Microsoft Excel. They began working with Oracle and their E-Business Suite in 2007 to support their financial reporting needs for their growing business in the evolving media and entertainment industry.

“GL Wand lets us access our Oracle data with Excel in an easy and proficient manner. The way it is linked to the system makes reporting, pulling balances, and accessing detail much easier,” said Michael Hinck, project manager, Finance Systems at HBO. ”Just as importantly, the security remains intact, yet employees at all levels have the ability to do a lot more with the data they have.”

Customer surveys by Excel4apps have indicated that GL Wand saves customers an average of two-to-four days per person per month on financial reporting, while enabling them to capitalize on their familiarity with Excel. Oracle PartnerNetwork, which works with more than 20,000 companies that create innovative software solutions based on the Oracle software, has recognized the value of the GL Wand system and has listed Excel4apps on the Oracle ISV solution maps for Financial Reporting Analysis.

“Our customers are excited about the GL Wand offering. They already use Excel and when they see the ease of access to their information during the free trial stage it’s not uncommon to hear excited exclamations during a demo. Our tool allows them to perform their jobs better by offering the best of the Microsoft Excel interface plus the security and performances inherent to Oracle offerings. GL Wand is simple to install, and employees have no problem learning to use it. They very quickly realize that they can save hours on routine and special tasks. They also have the ability to slice and dice their Oracle data in real time and drill down to ledger detail with a few clicks of the mouse,” says Michele Buson, Global Sales and Marketing Director for Excel4apps.

GL Wand can be downloaded from the Excel4apps website and tested with a simple pass key from the online demo system. A 30 day free trial is available. Technical support is available to users worldwide. For more information on GL Wand, visit the company’s website at www.excel4apps.com, or call 919 882 2114.

  • Excel4apps: Taking the World by the Wand

    19 September 2008

The growth of Excel4apps in its three short years is a testament to the company’s ability to identify market needs and execute viable solutions that are literally thrilling both IT experts and financial professionals worldwide. With a young and vibrant leadership team and an enviable knowledge of how businesses really work, Excel4apps is poised to continue to make life easier for finance departments in businesses both large and small. As a company borne in the internet age, Excel4apps was created to sell and support its products globally and harness the knowledge and skills of a globally dispersed workforce all joined by the internet.

Originally launched in South Africa and with its first GL Wand customer being a UK listed bank, the path to globalization was set in motion. After opening offices in Johannesburg, Sydney, and the heart of England, and with a new presence in Dubai and the United States, Excel4apps is servicing the world. The company’s original founders Michele Buson and Shaun Pendrigh, and key executives like Warren Brugger, all have extensive experience working with Oracle in dozens of different business situations. A recurring theme they’d always seen was the desire by financial professionals to use Excel.

“We saw early on that accountants do not want to move away from Excel, yet so many companies were trying to create business intelligence tools that were Excel-like. We thought, ‘Why not just create the interface so they can use Excel?’ and that is exactly what we did,” says Buson.

Oracle’s open framework architecture welcomes independent software companies to design applications for their users, and Microsoft Excel is also extendable, so the Excel4apps team set their sights on building the seamless integration that was so desperately needed. The result: one of the fastest growing software tools available: GL Wand. Acceptance of GL Wand has been fueled not only by need and its ability to perform, but by its ease of installation, ease of use, and unbeatable customer service. The company has built a worldwide presence quickly by developing a tool that offers an inexpensive option that allows users to work with tools they are intimately familiar with.

“Our success continues to be based on our understanding of what business users need. The flexibility of GL Wand means that ad hoc reports can be created in minutes from data in Oracle financials. IT professionals appreciate the ease of installation and deployment, which can take less than an hour,” Buson says.

As the history of this company continues to evolve and awareness spreads through the global business network, one thing is certain: though the past is relatively short, the future is going to be long and exciting.
